Uzbek Foreign Ministry spokesperson outlines Afghanistan conference objectives

Tashkent (UNA-OIC) – On the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on July 25-26, 2022 International conference “Afghanistan: security and economic development” will be held in Tashkent.

On the eve of this event, a press – briefing was organized by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Yusup Kabulzhanov.

According to Y. Kabulzhanov, the main objectives of the event are:

– to develop coordinated actions of the international community on the Afghan vector, specific proposals and actions for the economic recovery of the country, the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people;

– to establish an effective dialogue of the international community on the issue of accelerating by the new Kabul authorities of the process of fulfilling the key requirements of the world community – the creation of a government based on broad representation, respect for women’s rights and ensuring girls’ access to a full school education. This will be a fundamental condition for the completion of the process of national reconciliation in Afghanistan;

– Confirmation by the Interim Government of Afghanistan of previously assumed obligations to prevent the use of the territory of Afghanistan against the security interests of neighboring countries, other states of the region and the whole world.

– the importance of unfreezing Afghanistan’s financial assets abroad, as well as the implementation of various infrastructure projects in the country’s territory in the transport, communications and energy sectors.

“The implementation of these projects will not only contribute to the creation of thousands of jobs, the solution of the socio-economic problems of the Afghan society, but also the establishment of the long-awaited peace and stability in the land of Afghanistan” – stated the spokesman.

It is known that at the moment, the conference is expected to be attended by special representatives for Afghanistan from the UK, the European Union, Iran, Italy, Spain, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, China, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, the USA, Turkey, Japan and other countries, heads of the United Nations and its statutory bodies, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Economic Cooperation Organization, representatives of international financial institutions, as well as for the first time the delegation of the Interim Government of Afghanistan, headed by acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

In total, about 100 foreign delegations will take part in the event.

Y. Kabulzhanov added that at the conference speeches of the heads of delegations are envisaged. Within its framework, presentations of major projects implemented by the Republic of Uzbekistan aimed at the development of Afghanistan and its integration into international processes will also be organized:

– the project for the construction of the railway “Termez – Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar”;

– the project of laying the power line “Surkhan – Puli-Khumri”;

– activities of the international Multifunctional transport and logistics hub for the provision of humanitarian assistance;

– activities of the Educational Center for the training of Afghan citizens in the city of Termez.

Following the results of the International conference, the publication of the statement of the host country is expected.
