USAID signs $5.5 million grant agreement to support development in Sudan

Khartoum (UNA-OIC) – The Sudanese Ministry of Finance signed here on Saturday a development grant agreement of $5.5 million with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support Sudan’s democratic transition and promote its economic growth, as part of an estimated total amount of $200 million by 2024.

Sudanese Finance Minister Dr. Jibril Ibrahim said in a press conference after the signing ceremony that the agreement aims mainly to boost development, consolidate the democratic transition, and confront the challenges facing the transitional government.

The minister stressed that this support represents the start of big joint work and a boost to the partnership between Sudan and the United States in the coming period. He noted that the agreement marks the opening of a new financing channel that was not available in the past, explaining that USAID is the largest supporter in the humanitarian field, that has been cut off from Sudan in the past decades.

US Chargé d’affaires Brian Shukan said the agreement is a milestone step in the cooperation and partnership between the two sides, indicating that the grant aims to support the democratic transformation and development in Sudan. He affirmed the US commitment to supporting partnership and cooperation with the Sudan Transitional Government in the areas of development for the benefit of all the Sudanese people.

On his part, USAID’s Mission Director for Sudan Mervyn Farroe said that the agreement marks an important milestone in the relationship between the two governments. He affirmed the US keenness to support the democratic transition and peace in Sudan and to help the country face development challenges, exploit its resources and enhance economic growth.
