UNA participates in preparatory workshop for 8th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women

Jeddah (UNA-OIC) – The Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA) reviewed its efforts to support women issues through various programs, during its participation in the virtual workshop held on Tuesday by the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in collaboration with Egypt and Burkina Faso, Chair of the current session of the Ministerial Conference on Women.

The preparatory workshop discussed issues and documents to be submitted to the 8th session of the Ministerial Conference on the Role of Women in the Development of the OIC Member States, to be organized in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, from 6 to 8 July.

In its speech to the workshop, the Union administration thanked the OIC General Secretariat for its efforts in serving women issues and sponsoring the preparatory workshop. UNA also expressed gratitude to Egypt, the host country of the OIC Women Development Organization (WDO).

The speech highlighted the Union’s efforts in serving women issues in the Islamic world, and explained that the Union has taken it upon itself to sensitize people in the Islamic world to the causes of women and organize discussions on them within the Union’s programs, activities and media projects through two main tracks;

First, through the Union’s exchange media platform with news agencies in the OIC countries, in the three formal languages of the Organization (Arabic, English and French). In this regard, the Union publishes and covers the outcomes and efforts of the OIC General Secretariat in the women-related issues, as well as discussing women’s social, cultural and developmental issues, addressing them and correcting perceptions about them.

Second, through training programs that include training female media professionals in the areas of women issues and new media art, especially within the projects that were approved during the First Media Forum for news agencies organized by the Union on 16 May 2020 under the theme “The Role of News Agencies in Supporting Efforts to Combat Coronavirus in the Islamic world”. These projects are aimed at training 2,200 male and female media personnel in the Islamic world.

The speech also noted that the Union has forged several partnerships and memoranda of cooperation with the OIC organs, news agencies, and specialized institutions, to serve the media issues of women and children in the Islamic world.
