UN chief urges immediate global ceasefire to focus on effort in COVID-19 fight

New York (UNA-OIC) – United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Wednesday called for an immediate ceasefire across the world in order to focus on efforts to combat the coronavirus.

“I have appealed for an immediate global ceasefire to focus on the one true fight: the battle against the COVID‑19 pandemic, and the Security Council has joined this call,” Guterres told a UN Security Council meeting on the maintenance of international peace and security.

“But as I said in my address to the General Assembly, we need to step up our efforts. The clock is ticking – and people are dying,” he added.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases have surpassed 41 million globally, with over 1.1 million fatalities and more than 28 million recovered, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.

During the past few weeks, several countries around the world recorded significant increases in the number of infections, prompting many governments to impose strict precautionary measures in an effort to contain the spread of the pandemic.
