The piano man made it home (An ode to Edward Said)

Had a dream child
Things were fine
Back on the land
In old Palestine

You were running wild
From the river to the sea

For our day had come
We were finally free
The sweetest wine is liberty

And the bluest sky
You’ve ever seen
Came up at dawn

Adorned with the
Last kiss of a new moon
Like smiling crimson lips
Intent on seducing
The wretched heart of
This old refugee

We were eating olives
In the shade
Of orange scented groves
As a gentle sea
Caressed our shores

We were telling tales
About a life of woes
When they killed our
Children by the droves

When they stole the land
Raped olive trees
Burnt our homes
Built their walls

Well you know the story
All too well
These devil days
This living hell

It’s the same old tale
That we live this day
In a world so cruel
Where the bush men rule

Let me take you back
To my dream last night
And you’ll know damn well
It was worth the fight

For we laughed out loud
About the harsh old days
And we were so proud
About the crazy ways

That we threw our rocks
At their damn planes
Defied their tanks
With an angry gaze

Let me take you back
To my dream last night
And you’ll know damn well
It was worth the fight

As the red sun set
Things got real quiet
And we sat in silence
For just a while

Than the sweetest sound
You’ll ever hear
Like a lovely breeze
It was Eddie’s keys

And we all went wild
It was ecstasy
We strummed our ouds
In harmony

You could sense his smile
You could feel his grace
As he played his tune
We all kept pace

And we danced the dabka
All night long
While Eddie played
We sang his song

We knew each word
Never missed a line
For he taught us well
To sing that rhyme

You could sense his love
From the great beyond
Than the sound just faded
His work was done

The Piano man made it home

And the bluest sky
You’ve ever seen
Came back at dawn
To grace us all with the
First kiss of a rising sun

And the joy I felt
Burst open the heart
Of this old refugee

So if I don’t make it
Back with you
If I don’t live
To see that dream

When you hear his keys
Just sing along
And you’ll hear my oud
Strum his song

Let me take you back
To my dream last night
And you’ll know damn well
It was worth the fight

The Piano man made it home
