Pakistan's FM reaffirms Islamabad’s desire to enhance bilateral ties with Baghdad

Baghdad (UNA-OIC) – Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi reaffirmed Pakistan’s long-standing and friendly ties with Iraq and expressed Islamabad’s desire to further enhance existing bilateral ties with Baghdad in all spheres of cooperation. 

Qureshi made the remarks during his meeting with Iraqi President Dr. Barham Salih in Baghdad on Saturday. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq. 

Acknowledging the unyielding efforts and sacrifices of Iraq, and its people, in the fight against terrorism, the foreign minister wished peace, progress and prosperity for the brotherly people of Iraq.

The foreign minister briefed the president on Pakistan’s transformed vision centered around economic security, shifting focus from geo-politics to geo-economics. He outlined his country’s desire to offer itself as an economic hub through peace, development partnerships and connectivity.  

For his part, President Salih agreed that the two countries need to strengthen bilateral cooperation in mutually beneficial areas. He expressed appreciation of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s environmental initiatives and hoped for greater cooperation in this field.

The two sides also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest, with the foreign minister briefing the president on the situation in South Asia, in particular Pakistan’s approach towards the issues and disputes with India. He also briefed him about Pakistan’s consistent support for the Afghan Peace Process, and its steadfast diplomatic support for the just cause of Palestine. 

Qureshi also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to promote solidarity among the Muslim Ummah. He offered Islamabad’s support and cooperation for Baghdad’s efforts toward rebuilding and strengthening the country. 

Foreign Minister Qureshi is undertaking a three-day visit to Iraq, at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart.
