Khartoum (UNA-OIC) – The Sudanese government has welcomed UN Security Council President’s statement to hold a session on Thursday, July 8 in response to the request of Sudan, to discuss the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Sudan’s Foreign Minister Dr. Mariam Al-Sadig Al-Mahdi had sent a message to the President of the Security Council on June 22, calling for an urgent session of the 15-member body, to discuss the developments of the GERD dispute.

In her message, Ms. Al-Mahdi called for urging all parties to abide by their obligations under international law and to refrain from taking any unilateral measures. She also urged Ethiopia to stop unilaterally filling the dam before reaching a final agreement, to avoid aggravating the dispute and threatening regional and international peace and security.

The minister also called on the Council to ask all parties to support and strengthen the African Union mediation in a manner conducive to resolving the remaining outstanding issues of the dam through negotiations. She expressed Sudan’s deep concern and regret over Ethiopia’s announcement to proceed with the second filling of GERD unilaterally.
