OIC urges member states to protect rights of persons with disabilities

Jeddah (UNA-OIC) – The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) participated in the side event on the margins of the 14th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP14) titled “Protecting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Pandemics and Crises”.

The General Secretariat was represented by OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakheet, in the event that was organized by the Arab League of Arab on June 14 via videoconference, in cooperation with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the State of Kuwait, and the Arab Organization of Persons with Disabilities.

In his speech, Ambassador Bakheet urged OIC Member States to fulfil their obligations in the field of human rights protection, in accordance with the requirements of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol, and to expedite its ratification by countries that have not yet done so.

The Assistant Secretary-General also indicated that the OIC Action Plan on Persons with Disabilities aims to stimulate cooperation among member states in addressing the common issues faced by this group of society, raising their living standards and formulating policies that allow the integration of persons with disabilities into the labor market, and protect their dignity and empower them economically.
