Riyadh (UNA-OIC) – The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) called on the United Nations and the international community to take immediate action to contain the risk of the exploding or sinking of the Safer oil tanker anchored about 4.8 nautical miles off Port of Ras Isa in Yemen’s Hodeidah Governorate.
KSRelief said Monday in a statement that the condition of the FSO Safer has reached a critical point, spelling out that the tanker has become a ticking time bomb threatening the Red Sea and the countries bordering it with a humanitarian catastrophe.
Earlier, Experts have warned of an environmental catastrophe if the 45-year-old rusting oil tanker breaks apart. As well as devastating marine life in the Red Sea, an oil spill from the vessel could destroy the livelihoods of people who depend on the area for fishing.
