EU affirms readiness to facilitate withdrawal of mercenaries from Libya

Brussels (UNA-OIC) – Natalina Cea, Head of Mission of the European UnionBorder Assistance Mission (EUBAM) in Libya, affirmed the EU’s readiness to facilitate the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya, through a permanent platform for cooperation between the EU missions in Libya, Niger, Mali and Mauritania.

In a panel discussion at the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) on Saturday, Ms. Cea said the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) presented a plan to withdraw mercenaries from Libya, starting with those coming from the Sahel countries.

She confirmed that JMC requested the support of the EU, indicating that the European bloc is working on the regional coordination of its missions in Libya, Mali, Niger and Chad, and is making efforts with regard to disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.
