Egyptian president, German chancellor discuss regional issues, bilateral ties

Cairo (UNA-OIC) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed on Monday a number of regional issues of mutual interest and bilateral relations.

This came during a videoconference call, where both sides tackled the latest developments in Libya, stressing the need to continue intensive consultations between Egypt and Germany on this important file, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

They also exchanged views on the Palestinian issue, as Sisi highlighted Egypt’s efforts to cement the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and its efforts toward the reconstruction of the seaside enclave.

The conversation tackled the latest developments in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue, the statement said, pointing out that the Egyptian president reiterated Cairo’s position that calls for reaching a legally binding agreement on the filling and operating the dam.

For her part, Merkel expressed her appreciation for the growing and fruitful cooperation with Egypt over the past years, stressing that Germany values the longstanding bonds and firm relations it shares with Egypt.
