COVID-19 accelerated move towards future, forced rapid global changes

Riyadh (UNA-OIC) – Participants in the two-day Global Conference for Giftedness and Creativity, hosted by Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, affirmed that the coronavirus dramatically accelerated the movement towards the future and forced rapid changes worldwide.

The First Global Conference for Giftedness and Creativity saw during the opening session entitled “Imagine the Future … enabling talented and creative youth to shape new future horizons”, with the participation of Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz; Saudi Minister of Education Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh; and UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. Sunday’s session discussed how to build a creative generation and empower talented people with future skills and jobs.

The main session witnessed an intervention by the keynote speaker, Dr. Michio Kaku, a visiting professor at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton and New York University, who is the author of several textbooks on string theory and quantum field theory and has had more than 70 articles published in journals with topics such as superstring theory, supergravity supersymmetry, and hadronic physics. Then he touched on the fifth wave of the Industrial Revolution, during which people will communicate telepathically and promptly with anyone on the planet.

Prof. Kaku said the coronavirus has accelerated our movement towards the future and penetrated artificial intelligence so that the virus hotspots can be identified. He noted that social networking sites will give us the ability to track and talk with people, and we will be able to track some diseases through artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

Kaku explained that artificial intelligence will be everywhere, and the robot will perform many medical examinations more accurately than humans. He added that the virtual reality of scientists, economists, middle-class people and all economic processes will take place through virtual reality in the future, and we will be able to extract shapes from the living brain and immediately print it in 3D shape, which will constitute a revolution.

He indicated that people will be able to communicate via the Internet in the future through a small lens and with a twinkle of an eye, without the need for translation. In the future, humans will also be able to travel to the moon and perhaps to Mars.

The first day of the conference activities concluded with a second-panel discussion entitled “The Digital World … How Will It Change the Identity of the Future?”, moderated by Familusi A. Babajide, CEO of the community of young business leaders of African, and with the participation of Anthony Salcito, vice president for worldwide education at Microsoft; Hong-Eng Koh, Global Chief Government Industry Scientist at Huawei. Huawei; Maya Ajmera, President and CEO of Society for Science & the Public (SSP); and Joseph Bradley, Head of Technology and Digital at NEOM.

Bradley said that NEOM’s goal is to bring together the best talented and creative people in the world to develop solutions to the most pressing challenges facing humanity. He added that creativity and innovation are an integral part of NEOM’s work, not only in technology or the virtual world, but also in the arts, sciences and civil society.

Bradley stated that the physical and virtual worlds are intertwined in many aspects of life. He pointed out that NEOM will continue to find new ways to make the virtual world a better way to achieve its daily goals, and it will be one of the most technology-enabled environments in the world, with a global Wi-Fi network and a digital ecosystem with artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) and many other applications.

He added that NEOM cannot achieve its ambitions without attracting and developing the world’s greatest talents, and that its approach to continuing education helps it to do so, especially since the approved effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model includes cooperation between students, academics and industries that support NEOM, ensuring that all the outputs of creative solutions and innovation are at the core of everything it does.

The conference, which was scheduled to be held every two years, is a message from Saudi Arabia to the world, involves a future foresight, and strengthens the Kingdom’s global leadership in developing talented and creative youth capabilities to shape new future horizons and assert the ability of talented and creative individuals to create the virtual world and employ it efficiently.
