Baltimore, Maryland (UNA-OIC) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), condemned the racist comments reportedly made by Calvert County Board of Education Candidate Dawn Keen who alleged that people “whose skin is Blackwork less” than people “whose skin is white”, and that “equity is racism.”
In social media posts that were shared with CAIR, Keen also claimed that “equity stuff was planned by terrorists, and [the constituent who challenged her false interpretation of equity was] hoodwinked by Islamist ….”
“School board members are elected by their communities to serve as public representatives who champion those communities’ needs and work for measures that help promote their interests,” said Director of CAIR’s office in Maryland Zainab Chaudry.
“We strongly condemn these racist, tone-deaf comments that were brought to CAIR’s attention. Students in our school systems deserve principled representatives who are committed to inclusivity and can demonstrate basic knowledge of critical concepts like equity.”
Calvert County is a predominantly Republican county located in Southern Maryland and Keen’s social media posts favor Republican politicians, but the board of education races is non-partisan.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
